Daifuku Co. Ltd is a world leader in the provision of automated handling solutions providing end-to-end solutions for airports globally. Babbage is currently engaged to provide a range of professional engineering consultancy services to Daifuku to support their upgrade/replacement of the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL). Babbage’s services include Project Management, Planning, Fire Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Laser Scanning.

To support fine structural design tolerances for both the existing mezzanine structure and new conveyor platform layout, as well as the integration of new hanging steelwork, Babbage Land Survey was engaged to complete a comprehensive asbuilt survey of the existing baggage hall area across five locations within the ground- and air-side areas of the airport.

Our engagement encompassed a comprehensive scope of reality capture and modelling, the primary objective of which was to provide robust design support and innovative solutions, allowing Daifuku to seamlessly undertake the reconfiguration of the baggage handling system.

Recognising the operational significance of the baggage hall, which operates non-stop, as well as the complexity of the handling system equipment and safety considerations, laser scanning the area was seen as by far the best solution.

Given that the existing system had to remain operational during the capture process as well as the safety and security considerations presented by an operational international airport baggage processing and arrivals area, we planned multiple site visits to align with ongoing work activities, ensuring minimal disruption.

Our deliverables included a precisely crafted Revit model showcasing the new design, enriched with mixed visuals derived from reality capture. This approach underscores our commitment to delivering practical solutions while maintaining operational continuity.
Our deliverables met the requirements required by the Airport, adhering to the AIAL survey control network standards and the guidelines specified in the Digital survey handbook.

Throughout the project, we encountered various air-side regulations which we promptly addressed.

Documentation and communication were efficiently managed through our dedicated project manager, streamlining the process and facilitating smooth communication between all parties involved.

A crucial lesson learned from this project is the importance of understanding and adhering to the diverse layers of safety and security protocols inherent in critical infrastructure projects.

We had proactively navigated through these requirements and sought clarification ensuring the successful completion of the project while upholding safety standards.
